Bathroom exhaust fans are easy to overlook, but they can become a serious fire hazard if not properly maintained. Over time, dust, lint and debris collect inside the fan housing and on the motor. This buildup restricts airflow and can cause the motor to overheat, creating the potential for ignition. The Woodlands Fire Department responds to several fires each year that are traced back to bathroom exhaust fans.

Many of these incidents occur because fans are left running for extended periods and are rarely or never cleaned. A fan that runs continuously or struggles due to debris buildup is more likely to fail and overheat. This is especially important in a humid environment where fans are used frequently to control moisture.

Residents should make it a habit to turn off bathroom fans when they leave the room and avoid running them for long periods when not needed. Regular cleaning is also essential. This includes removing the cover, clearing dust and ensuring the vent is unobstructed so air can flow properly. If a fan makes unusual noises, vibrates or seems less effective, it may be time for maintenance or replacement.

Taking a few simple steps can greatly reduce the risk of a hidden fire hazard in your home.
